On less is more; why we take a minimalist approach to skincare.
Popular option may state that we need an 8 step skincare system in place to maintain a beautiful glow. I actually believe quite the opposite; that when it comes to skincare less is more.
Here’s why:
Our skin is a fully functioning organ within our bodies. Our bodies are absolutely magical and highly evolved so our skin actually makes it’s own protective layer, often referred to as the moisture barrier. This moisture barrier sits on the outer layer of skin in healthy individuals and keeps the skin moist and protects the microbiome. This oily layer is made of sebum (our skin’s natural oil), salts (from sweat) and natural humectants.
I believe that in order to take the best care of our skin we have to keep our skin function as close to its natural state as possible, which means keeping our moisture barrier intact. Using a ton of different products and harsh cleansers that your skin truly doesn’t need can not only damage the skin’s moisture barrier but strip it away completely. This is when many skin issues come into play. Not only are these practices hard on the skin, but also on the planet and the wallet.
I formulate holistically, with the whole being in mind and create products are designed to nourish and enhance the moisture barrier with natural ingredients that the skin knows and loves. If we can shift our mindsets slightly to simply supporting the skin in its natural functions rather than trying to take over completely, our skin will be so much happier. I find our culture is told we must cleanse it all away, then replenish; washing our face with surfactants (products that bubble) and then replenish by applying moisture. But is this always necessary? What if we cleansed gently, with an oil cleanser that doesn’t dissolve the moisture barrier and then the replenishing part would be more of a joy than a desperation from your tight dry skin that’s struggling to replace it’s lost moisture barrier day after day.
In a culture that is always pressuring us to do more, here’s your permission to do less. Your skin will thank you.
